What Can Architecture Learn From Nature?

Brett Holverstott answers the question thus:

“Ultimately, biomimicry seeks to understand how we ought to integrate ourselves with nature. I find hope in the principle that, in nature, there are no hard boundaries or edges; materials merge together seamlessly. Perhaps through the emulation of nature, we will come to live more symbiotically with it, and our environments will become both closer to nature and less invasive to it.”

To learn more about biomimicry and architecture/building put the GreenBuild Expo in your calendar: http://www.greenbuildexpo.org.

Also, closer to my home in San Francisco there is a one-day pre-conference session at West Coast Green on Sept 24th.

GoingGreen 100 Announced

Posted by davidwfox on 08 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: research & reports

GoingGreenAlwaysOn is a silicon valley media that hopes to “identify the sweet spots in the market, where technology innovation is disrupting behavior and creating explosive new entrepreneurial opportunities for both startups and big businesses” so it’s not surprising that they’re tracking the ‘green’ market. They’ve just announced their Top 100 list:

Investment and public interest in cleantech continues to grow in the face of record gas prices and increased concern for the environment and global warming. With that backdrop, AlwaysOn presents the second annual GoingGreen 100 Top Private Companies list, featuring leading private companies in cleantech. Continued at AlwaysOn…

Much of their ‘Top 100′ list could be called ‘light green’ so I hope next year they’ll dig deeper to find some of the many ‘deep green’, truly transformative technologies.

If you’re attending the GoingGreen conference Sept 15-17 here in SF lets connect!

Animal Minds

To the Best of Our Knowledge

Fascinating program from one of my favorite radio shows/podcasts:

In Baltimore, Maryland, there’s an octopus that likes to play with toys. In Vienna, Austria, there’s a border collie with a vocabulary of 340 words - more than many toddlers. Southeast Asia is home to dozens of elephants who like to paint. In this hour of To the Best of Our Knowledge, re-thinking animal intelligence. Not only are they smarter than we thought – in some cases they’re smarter than us.

You can listen to the program here, but note you’ll need Real Audio player.
